The Subway of the Future
Stockholm’s subway system is undergoing its largest expansion in decades. As the Blue Line is extended southward from Kungsträdgården, the tracks will run deep beneath the Saltsjön to connect the city center with Nacka and Söderort.
For Södermalm - a neighborhood that hasn’t had a new subway station since the mid-20th century - this represents a major revolution in public transportation.
The New Stations in Södermalm
The expansion will add two brand-new stations that directly serve the residents of Södermalm:
1. Sofia Station (Stigbergsparken)
Located in eastern Södermalm, Sofia Station will be a brand-new transit hub at the intersection of Folkungagatan and Ersta Hospital. Here, the tracks split underground into two directions: one branch continues east toward Nacka, and the other south toward Gullmarsplan and Hagsätra.
- Location: The main entrance and station building will be located in the center of Stigberg Park.
- Travel time: Only 4 minutes to T-Centralen without changing trains.
2. Hammarby Canal Station (Vintertullstorget)
Although the station is named after the body of water between Södermalm and Hammarby Sjöstad, the northern exit is firmly anchored on Södermalm.
- Location: The north entrance will be integrated into an existing building near Vintertullstorget / Katarina Bangata. The south entrance is located at Luma in Hammarby Sjöstad with convenient access to the Tvärbanan.
- Travel time: Approx. 6 minutes to T-Centralen.
